 Membership

Membership of the association is by invitation of the association committee. New members may be proposed for membership by an existing member, the proposal will have to be seconded by another existing member. The proposal will be discussed at the next committee meeting and barring objections an invitation to join the association will be issued.

Newsletter

The association publishes a regular newsletter which is distributed to all members by post, this containes information and reports on our social calendar, reports on the input our association is having on the redevelopement of the beck as well as the wider waterways system and much more. We have regular articles on local history, wildlife, as well as humorous reporting of incidents, accidents and occurrences as well as the more serious, legal and regulatory side of boating.

Social Events

Social events are organised by the association throughout the year, including an informal monthly social meeting (held in a suitably heated establishedment well equipped to cater for the thirsty!) an annual barbecue and several cruises in company throughout the year, often ending with a 'pie and peas' evening which have now become our signature dish! The association also arranges participation in local events with of a maritime nature or which have an association with the beck and waterways of East Yorkshire, as well as the more mundane IWA affiliated 'litter picking' days out along the beckside.

 Boatwatch
One of the benefits of Association membership is your inclusion (if you wish to participate) in the 'Boatwatch' scheme which essentially means that all members should be keeping an eye on your boat for you whenever they pass. The idea was inspired by the 'Neighborhood watch' schemes that have made our streets safer. If you are known to our members they will be watching your boat and this greatly increases the chances that an opportunist thief or trespasser will be stopped and challenged, and any suspicious behaviour will be dealt with appropriately.
Remember also that most leisure vessels that sink in the UK do not do so at sea or in adverse weather, but at their moorings while unattended! Another benefit of the scheme is to be able to keep a friendly on each other's boats and hopefully get early warning the the battery has run down and the bilge pump is no longer bailing out rain water - or as happened to one of our members, an automatic float switch stuck!
The details of the scheme and it's operation are not made public as a security measure, but since it's inception the security of all our boats has been greatly increased and petty theft has almost disappeared. The success of this scheme is ultimately determined by the vigilance and participation of our members, so please keep an eye on each other's boats when you're visiting yours, as someone else is keeping an eye on yours while you're away.
